Positive Thinking and Healthy Habits

Right now in my school counseling classes I am using the "Positive Action" curriculum and we are talking about how positive thoughts lead to positive choices and result in positive feelings about ourselves or positive self esteem and self concept.  As part of the curriculum, we are discussing how HEALTHY choices such as eating right, good hygiene, getting enough sleep, exercise, and avoiding things that cause us harm, are all positive choices that lead us to feeling good about ourselves.  We take this opportunity to bring up medicines and drugs along with alcohol and tobacco.  It is never too early to talk to your children about making good choices, even if they are not faced with these situations.  Just like you teach your children values about being kind, responsible, etc.,  teaching them your values about drugs and alcohol sets a foundation for the future.  Here is a link to the "American Council on Drug Educations" article regarding age appropriateness and ideas of what to say.
